20-year-old student Khalilou lives alone with his mother Rama in Dakar. She suffers from cancer after years of using skin-lightening creams to conform to the prevailing beauty ideal promoted by models on billboards and Senegalese television. One day, while meeting his best friend Abdel at the basketball court, Khalilou spots a poster for the country’s most popular beauty contest, Miss Étudiantes. Khalilou makes a bet with his mother: if dark-skinned students win the competition, she will take control of her life and finally stop lightening her skin…
