In this poetic masterpiece, Mosese reflects through fragmented narratives and mythical imagery on personal experiences of uprootedness and belonging—a meditation on his childhood and growing up in Lesotho up to his journey into exile. Inspired by oral storytelling traditions, ANCESTRAL VISIONS OF THE FUTURE is a poetic autobiography that unfolds in spirals and loops. A recurring image of blood-red fabric weaves together memories of war, childhood, and encounters with a series of mythical figures, including a street puppeteer, a martial artist, and, not least, his mother.

The Berlin-based filmmaker and visual artist has been a guest at AFRIKAMERA multiple times, most recently in 2020 with his film THIS IS NOT A BURIAL, IT’S A RESURRECTION.

ANCESTRAL VISIONS OF THE FUTURE had its world premiere this year at the Berlin International Film Festival in the Berlinale Special section.

LEMOHANG JEREMIAH MOSESE, a self-taught filmmaker, created the cinematic essay MOTHER, I AM SUFFOCATING. THIS IS MY LAST FILM ABOUT YOU, which premiered in the 2019 Berlinale Forum and was later screened at other renowned festivals and institutions such as MoMA. His feature film THIS IS NOT A BURIAL, IT’S A RESURRECTION won over 30 awards, including the Visionary Filmmaking Jury Award at the Sundance Film Festival.
