Gaël was only five years old when his mother died of AIDS. Her death was soon overshadowed by the devastating civil wars and genocides in Burundi and Rwanda. As a result, Gaël—like many other Rwandans—was forced into exile. Thirty years later, he dares to confront his family history, which is also the fateful story of an entire generation of Rwandan women. He sets out to find those who knew his mother Didy, loved her, and in their own ways shaped him. Through the memories of Didy’s three sisters and other women who knew her well, the portrait of a strong, fearless, and independent woman emerges.

GAËL KAMILINDI (*1986, Democratic Republic of Congo) grew up in Switzerland and graduated in 2011 from the Conservatoire National d’Art Dramatique in Paris. He has worked with directors such as Bob Wilson, Jean-Pierre Vincent, Krzysztof Warlikowski, Mélanie Laurent, and Denis Podalydès. Since 2017, he has been a member of the Comédie-Française. In film and television, he has collaborated with Mona Achache, Philippe Garrel, Pierre Aknine, and Catherine Corsini. DIDY, his first feature-length documentary, was created in collaboration with filmmaker François-Xavier Destors.

FRANÇOIS-XAVIER DESTORS (*1986, Paris) is a French filmmaker whose work deals with the invisibility of mass atrocities and questions of memory. His first film was RWANDA (2014), followed by MELTING SOULS (2018), MADELA, BEYOND THE MYTH (2019), and THIAROYE 44 (2022).
