Guled and Nasra live together with their teenage son Mahad in an outskirt of Djibouti City. Guled keeps his family afloat with a job as a gravedigger. When Nasra needs an expensive operation due to a chronic kidney disease, the family faces the challenge of raising the necessary money without losing cohesion.
Made exclusively with amateur actors, the feature-length debut premiered at this year’s Critic’s Week in Cannes. At FESPACO 2021, Khadar Ayderus Ahmed has just been awarded the “Etalon d’Or”.
Finnish-Somali writer-director Khadar Ayderus Ahmed was born in Mogadishu 40 years ago. He has directed several successful short films, including “The Night Thief” (2017). He has also made a name for himself as a screenwriter, including “Unexpected Journey” (co-written with Samuli Valkama, 2017) and the Locarno and Angers award-winning short film “Citizens” (directed by Juho Kuosmanen, 2008). THE GRAVEDIGGER’S WIFE is his first feature film.
