LAMB BY YARED ZELEKE
ETHIOPIA 2015 DCP OMU 94 MIN
The debut film by Ethiopian director Yared Zeleke depicts the unusual portrait of nine-year-old Ephraim. After the death of his mother, his father brings him to relatives. But the boy can not make friends with the way of life of the mountain farmers – also because his ideas and wishes completely run counter to established gender roles. His best friend Chuni, a lamb … gives him comfort. Filmed in the Gondar region, the impressive coming-of-age film provides insights into family structures and living conditions in the Horn of Africa, as well as pays homage to the overwhelming Ethiopian highlands.
YARED ZELEKE is an Ethiopian screenwriter, producer, publisher and director. His debut film LAMB was the first Ethiopian film to be premiered in the official Cannes selection and the third film the country submitted to the Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film.
